Few figures in Colombian television have gone from being a respected soap opera actress to becoming a national topic of conversation in a matter of weeks. Nataly Umaña achieved this, and not precisely because of a role. But before getting to the real-life soap opera, it’s worth understanding who this woman is, who has been in front of the cameras for over two decades.
Who is Nataly Umaña
Nataly Umaña Patiño was born in Ibagué, Tolima, on January 3, 1986. She is an actress, model, and businesswoman, and by now she has surpassed 40 years, although her résumé seems to belong to someone who started acting practically right out of kindergarten.
She is the youngest of five siblings and, interestingly, she did not arrive at acting by chance: her father, actor William Umaña, was the one who pushed her towards the stage. She lived in her hometown of Ibagué until she was 15, when her parents separated and she moved to Bogotá with her mother. There, instead of spending her teenage years doing what most teenagers do (nothing productive), she immersed herself in theatre.
From Ibagué to the stages of London
Nataly’s journey was not improvised. She trained at the Colombian Circle of Artists (CICA) in Bogotá and then went to London to take things very seriously. She studied at St Giles International and, pay attention, at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), the same school that has been attended by actors who later collect awards.
Her theatrical debut came early, with heavyweight plays like Tartufo by Molière and Macbeth by Shakespeare. No roles as tree number three in the school play.
Her first roles on television
In 2003, she made the leap to television. She started with small roles, the kind that appear in the credits if one stays until the end, but things grew quickly. Her name began to be heard and the characters gained weight. Patience, in her case, did pay off.
The soap operas that made her famous
This is where Nataly truly built her career. Her list of productions is long, but there are titles that anyone who has had a television on in Colombia will recognise instantly.
She participated in Los Reyes, En los tacones de Eva, Oye bonita, La tormenta, and Las detectivas y el Víctor, among many others. She also crossed borders: she played Gina Ramírez in the Mexican Tres veces Ana, produced by Televisa, which is no small feat for a Colombian actress.
Then there are the roles that made headlines. In El cartel de los sapos, she brought to life Juanita Marín, a character inspired by a real figure, something that generated quite a stir at the time. She also added appearances in high-audience productions that consolidated her as one of the most versatile actresses of her generation. Intense drama, light comedy, manipulative villain: little has resisted her.
The scandal of La casa de los famosos
And then came 2024, the year her career split in two. Nataly entered the first season of La casa de los famosos Colombia and starred in one of the most talked-about episodes of recent national television.
It turns out that a romance blossomed inside the house with Panamanian singer Miguel Melfi. The detail, not insignificant, is that Nataly was still married to actor Alejandro Estrada, with whom she had been for over a decade. The entire country witnessed it live, turning the matter into a debate worthy of a gossip show for months.
The scene that went down in history was when Estrada entered the reality show, returned the wedding ring, and ended the relationship. Record audience, social media ablaze, and opinions for all tastes. Regarding the romance with Melfi, the Panamanian later clarified that his feelings were real and that, outside the house, it did not progress: it remained a friendship and nothing more.
Partner and children: what is known today
Let’s get to what many are really looking for. Nataly Umaña has no children of her own. During her marriage to Alejandro Estrada, the couple did not have offspring, although he is the father of a son named Tomás from a previous relationship.
And what about her current partner? Here the soap opera continued even after the credits. After the separation, Nataly and Estrada took different paths for over a year. But at the end of 2025, they reappeared together on a television show, immediately igniting reconciliation rumours. And if that wasn’t enough for another chapter, when Estrada won a new season of the reality show in May 2026 with a prize of 400 million pesos, Nataly publicly celebrated it and spoke of healing and closing the chapter on good terms. Mature of her, some would say; others simply settled on the sofa to see what happened.

On her Instagram, she has amassed over 750,000 followers, where she shares her daily life, collaborations with brands, and the projects she’s involved in, including a shoot in Mexico with a new look. She also showcased the moment she danced with Shakira, because if you’re going to make noise, you might as well do it big.
Between acting, modelling, business, and a personal life that has generated more headlines than some of her soap operas, Nataly Umaña remains, whether some like it or not, one of the most talked-about figures in Colombian entertainment.
