Alcalá de Henares celebrates the declaration of its cultural heritage as a Cultural Asset of Interest

A historic recognition for Alcalá de Henares

The Community of Madrid has taken a significant step in preserving cultural heritage by approving the declaration of the Society of Condueños as a Cultural Asset of Interest. This recognition, which falls within the realm of Intangible Heritage, highlights the historical and cultural importance of this institution, which has been fundamental in preserving the architectural and educational legacy of Alcalá.

Founded on January 12, 1851, the Society's main objective is to save and restore the buildings that were part of the central core of the old University founded by Cardenal Cisneros. This university, established in 1499, was pioneering in its time and served as a model for other educational institutions in Spain and Latin America.

The mayor Judith Piquet, upon hearing the news, expressed her joy and pride at this new achievement. In her words, she emphasized that this recognition not only benefits Alcalá but also represents a point of pride for all of Spain. “The Society has played a crucial role in preserving the unique heritage that represents our history,” Piquet stated.

Under the leadership of president José Félix Huerta, the Society has fought for over 175 years to preserve this legacy. Huerta recently commented: “This declaration is a tribute to our constant work to protect cultural heritage. We are a non-profit association pioneering in Spain and possibly in all of Western Europe.”

The origin of this society dates back to the official transfer of the University to Madrid in 1836, which left the university buildings unprotected against the disappropriation laws. In response to this situation, a visionary group decided to act to prevent these assets from being sold to private individuals without consideration for their historical value.

Throughout the centuries, the University of Alcalá was not only a prominent educational centre; its organisational model significantly influenced other European and American universities between the 16th and 19th centuries. Current preservation ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn about this important cultural legacy.
