Visitors to Alcalá de Henares can explore the city through Cervantine characters on free routes. The activities will take place on Saturdays throughout the month, starting on 15 August.
The city of Alcalá de Henares becomes a living stage for lovers of literature and history this August. From Saturday 15, tourists and locals will have the opportunity to participate in theatrical routes that bring to life the works of the renowned writer Miguel de Cervantes, born in this town in 1547. The initiative, promoted by the Community of Madrid, aims to connect the public with the iconic characters created by Cervantes, such as Dulcinea del Toboso and La Gitanilla.
The guided tours will begin at the Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes, where two sessions will be offered every Saturday: one at 11:00 and another at 12:30. Each tour will last approximately 60 minutes and will be led by professional actors portraying the author's most emblematic characters. Tickets are free but limited; they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from 10:30 until places run out, with a maximum of two tickets per person.
This event not only highlights the literary legacy of the municipality but also promotes its cultural heritage, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Among the highlights to be visited are the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso and the Corral de Comedias, a theatre active since 1601 that has witnessed the development of Spanish art for centuries.
Additionally, the Museo Casa Natal is hosting an exhibition titled *With Cloak and Sword. Fashion in the Time of Cervantes* until the end of the month, showcasing typical clothing from the Spanish Golden Age. This exhibition includes representative outfits from both the court and the common people, analysing how these garments helped bring Cervantine characters to life. Visitors will be able to appreciate guardainfantes, gorgueras, and jubones among other elements that reflect the cultural and social richness of the period.
The Noiz Arte company will be responsible for both the script and the performances during the tourist routes. Juan Polanco directs this innovative proposal that combines theatre and history to offer a unique experience to visitors. According to Polanco, “the idea is to make every corner speak about Cervantes and his work.”
Interest in these activities has grown considerably since their initial announcement; many are eagerly looking forward to immersing themselves in the Cervantine world while walking through the historic streets where the author lived.
For those interested in participating, it is advisable to arrive early at the museum to secure their free entry. Moreover, those wishing to fully enjoy their visit can take the opportunity to explore other nearby tourist attractions or savour local cuisine before or after the theatrical route.
