Fernanda Orazi Challenges Reality at Matadero with Unamuno

A Journey to the Heart of Fiction

The Nave 10 Matadero transforms into a space where reality and fiction intertwine, thanks to the innovative proposal by Fernanda Orazi. The Argentine actress and director presents an adaptation of Niebla, the masterpiece by Spanish philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno, which will be on stage until 12 April.

In this contemporary version, the protagonist, Augusto Pérez, played by Juan Paños, faces an existential crisis that leads him to question his own nature as a fictional character. The play, originally published in 1914, explores the boundaries between creator and creation, posing profound questions about identity and purpose.

Unlike conventional readings, Orazi proposes a theatrical experience that transcends the boundaries of the stage. In her own words, “we must ask ourselves what we do with tradition; if we leave it in a showcase, it loses that ability to speak.” Thus, her production not only pays homage to Unamuno but also invites the audience to reflect on its relevance in the current context.

Through an ingenious mix of humour and tragedy, Orazi manages to connect with the metaphysical anxieties present in the original work. This duality allows the spectator to experience both the suffering and the comedic moments that arise from the absurdity of existence. “Humour breaks logic just as it happens in the tragic vision,” says Orazi, highlighting how these emotions can coexist to offer a richer view of the human conflict.

One of the central themes addressed is the relationship between Augusto and his creator, a dialogue that evokes questions about God and the meaning of life. The play poses a disturbing dilemma: what happens when a man wishes to end his existence but discovers he cannot do so because he is merely a character? This conflict resonates deeply with the philosophical concerns raised by Unamuno.

As this unique performance unfolds, spectators are invited to question not only their perception of dramatic art but also their own lives. To what extent are we masters of our decisions? And what role does our creator—be it an author or a divine force—play in our existence? With each performance, Fernanda Orazi challenges the audience to explore these fundamental questions while reviving one of Spain's great thinkers.
