A unique space in the heart of Madrid

In the bustling Chueca neighbourhood of Madrid lies La Oficial, a ceramics shop that has transcended its commercial function to become a true cultural phenomenon. Founded by Toni Torrecillas, a former journalist who decided to make a radical career change, this venue not only offers handcrafted pieces but also serves as a meeting point for celebrities and art lovers.

Toni Torrecillas, who previously worked in media outlets such as ABC and S Moda, embarked on this adventure without a defined plan. His passion for ceramics led him to explore the pottery villages of Spain and Portugal, where he discovered the cultural and artisanal richness that was at risk of extinction. Thus, La Oficial was born, a tribute to the traditional crafts that deserve to be preserved.

The allure of La Oficial has attracted prominent figures from film and music. From Aitana to Pedro Almodóvar, many have found in this space a refuge to disconnect from the daily hustle. Among memorable anecdotes is the visit of Susan Sarandon, who was captivated by a Spanish jug, but with an unconventional idea: to fill it with tequila to enjoy at a party.

The shop houses 18 artisan workshops producing everything from accessible objects to masterpieces like the unique plates created by Abraham Menéndez, whose work can reach exorbitant prices due to the more than 200 hours dedicated to each piece. These works have found their place in private collections and have even been used by Michelin-starred restaurants.

Toni does not limit himself to selling ceramics; he also seeks to tell stories. A special collection pays tribute to the women of the 14th century in Talavera de la Reina, many of whom were considered witches for their medicinal knowledge. Jars with inscriptions like “Pócima” or “Hechizo” are perfect examples of how La Oficial merges tradition and modernity.

Despite the current surge in interest in ceramics, Toni maintains a clear distinction between handcrafted and mass-produced items. For him, the emotional and unique value that each handmade piece brings is incomparable to industrial products. Moreover, his influence has crossed borders; he is currently curating a shop dedicated to Spanish ceramics in a museum in South Korea.

Through La Oficial, Toni Torrecillas not only defends manual art against modern consumerism; he also invites the whole world to rediscover the beauty and meaning behind each object made with love and dedication. In his own words: «If things go wrong, I will make them go right».
