A new cultural space for Lavapiés
The Madrid neighbourhood of Lavapiés is preparing to receive a significant boost in its community life with the transfer of two warehouses from the Tabacalera complex, which will be dedicated to social and cultural activities. This agreement, reached between the Ministry of Culture and the neighbourhood collective Remontada Tabacalera, will allow the spaces to be operational from the last quarter of 2026, following the necessary rehabilitation works.
The warehouses involved are Nave Trapecio and Nave Trastocados/Metrópolis, which have approximate areas of 512 and 288 square metres, respectively. Both structures will be completely rehabilitated to ensure their safety and suitability before being opened to the public. This effort aims to reinforce the social and cultural role of the complex in relation to the neighbourhood.
Despite the enthusiasm from the neighbourhood collective, the decision has generated criticism from the Madrid City Council. Deputy Mayor Inma Sanz expressed her discontent over the lack of response from the Ministry regarding a previous proposal suggesting that part of the complex be allocated for housing. According to Sanz, this omission reflects a disconnect between municipal discussions and governmental decisions.
The management of the new spaces will be in the hands of the Self-Managed Social Centre (CSA) La Tabacalera, along with various local associations such as the Tenants' Union of Madrid and 8M Lavapiés. These organisations plan to focus their efforts on promoting a self-managed culture, social unionism, and solidarity economy. From Remontada Tabacalera, this agreement has been described as “great news” for reclaiming a space intended for community use.
In addition to the current transfer, a future Tabacalera Centre for Production and Artistic Residencies is planned, approved by royal decree in 2025. This centre aims to be a place dedicated to artistic research that maintains an open relationship with local residents. However, some neighbours have expressed concerns about whether this approach truly addresses the needs of the neighbourhood.
Despite the progress towards a more community-oriented use of the space, many residents continue to demand more immediate solutions for pressing issues such as access to affordable housing or recreational facilities. Neighbours believe there is already sufficient artistic provision in Lavapiés and insist that projects like sports complexes or libraries be prioritised.
