A tribute to dramatic art in the capital
The World Theatre Day is approaching, and Madrid is preparing to pay tribute to this art form with a series of free activities at the iconic Teatro Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa. On 26 and 27 March, theatre lovers will be able to enjoy a varied programme that includes commented readings, guided tours, and educational concerts, all organised by the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Madrid City Council.
The celebration will begin on Thursday 26 March, with a commented reading titled Chekhov, the Ecologist Playwright. This activity will be moderated by the collective La Otra Arcadia, made up of Ana Contreras and Raúl Losánez. During this session, which will take place between 16:30 and 19:30, texts by authors such as Anton Chekhov and José María Gabriel y Galán, who have addressed themes related to nature and environmental conservation in their works, will be explored. The participation of actors currently on stage, such as those from 1984 and The Cherry Orchard, will further enrich this literary experience.
The following day, coinciding with the official date of World Theatre Day, a ‘Scenic Walk through The Cherry Orchard’ will take place. This guided tour will offer attendees a unique opportunity to learn about the scenery of the production from the inside. Directed by Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente, co-scenographer of the show along with Isi Ponce and Abel Ferris, this activity will allow participants to access the stage and interact with key elements such as costumes, props, and models. The visits will be conducted in small groups between 16:30 and 18:00.
That same afternoon, a pedagogical concert-workshop titled The Disappearance of Fireflies will also be held, presented by the group El Naán in the Multi-Purpose Room. This event will combine traditional music with poetry using indigenous instruments such as clay pots or rabeles. It is a proposal that seeks to explore the cultural roots linked to the rural world.
To culminate these festive days, there will be a special meeting between the audience and the actors after the performance of 1984. This dialogue will allow attendees to learn more about the creative process behind this contemporary work.
