A Celebration Making a Strong Comeback
The Carnival of Madrid is just around the corner, and from 14th to 18th February 2026, the city will transform into a vibrant stage filled with music, dance, and creativity. With the iconic Matadero Madrid and Madrid Río as the epicentres of this festivity, locals and visitors will enjoy a unique experience that pays tribute to the masked dances of the 1920s.
The official opening of the carnival will begin with the much-anticipated pregón, scheduled for 14th February at 1 PM. This event will be presented by a well-known figure, whose name will be revealed shortly before the start. The pregón will lead into the Grand Parade, which will traverse the streets from Puerta de Toledo to Matadero, where a DJ will enliven the arrival of the festive procession.
The closing of the carnival will also be spectacular with the traditional Burial of the Sardine, taking place on 18th February at 6 PM. This symbolic event will pay homage to the first honorary brother, Francisco de Goya, as a funeral procession winds through several iconic streets to its final destination.
No carnival is complete without music. On Saturday 15th February, the Matadero square will host a vibrant gathering of comparsas and chirigotas. Starting at 12 PM, these groups will deliver performances filled with humour and social critique. Before that, at 11 AM, the traditional Manteo del Pelele will take place, a show that combines satire and tradition.
Throughout the carnival, there will be multiple activities designed to engage the whole family. From workshops to create costumes inspired by the Bauhaus to activities where participants can design their own masks or invent superheroes. These workshops will take place at various times during the festive days at Matadero Madrid.
Aside from the main parade and musical performances, there will be a full series of scheduled shows at Matadero Madrid. From magic to theatre with giant puppets, including group classes in Caribbean dance and orchestras performing Latin American rhythms. The party will culminate each day with DJ sessions mixing diverse musical genres.
