A Holy Wednesday Full of Tradition in Madrid
Holy Week in Madrid comes alive this Holy Wednesday with the celebration of two processions that promise to attract thousands of faithful and curious onlookers. Starting at 19:45, the streets of the capital's centre will be filled with religious fervour and music, thanks to the brotherhoods of Jesus of the Three Falls and The Gypsies.
The first procession, that of Jesus of the Three Falls, will begin at the Royal Parish Church of Santiago and San Juan Bautista, located in Plaza de Santiago. From there, the procession will follow a route that includes iconic points such as Plaza Mayor and Plaza de San Miguel before returning to the temple.
On the other hand, the brotherhood known as The Gypsies will start their journey from the Parish of Our Lady of Carmen and San Luis Obispo, situated on Calle del Carmen. Their path will lead them to iconic places such as Puerta del Sol and Atocha, concluding the cycle with a triumphant return to their starting point.
The central image of the Jesus of the Three Falls float was created by Antonio José Labrador Jiménez in 2016 and depicts Christ in his third stumble on the way to Calvary. This year, an additional figure is included: Simon of Cyrene, who helps Jesus carry his cross. The brotherhood organising this procession is known for its nazarenes dressed in white robes with red and gold details.
In contrast, The Gypsies have a rich history dating back to 1753. Their main float features Our Father Jesus of Health, a work by sculptor Ángel Rengel. This image is accompanied by Our Lady of Sorrows, who stands out with her impressive golden crown and an embroidered canopy.
Each procession is not only a visual display; it is also a significant musical event. The Band of Cornets and Drums of the Most Holy Christ will provide the sound accompaniment for Jesus of the Three Falls. Meanwhile, The Gypsies will have two musical groups: El Perdón for the main float and La Lira for the Marian float.
Starting in 2026, a new tradition will be introduced in the Jesus of the Three Falls procession with the special participation of the Association of Veteran Green Berets Central Zone. This group will guard a recently blessed Marian banner.
As the day progresses towards the official start of the most awaited religious event for the people of Madrid, it is clear that this Holy Wednesday is not only a spiritual celebration but also a cultural manifestation rich in history and local identity. The streets are preparing to welcome all those who wish to actively participate or simply observe this beautiful tradition.
