A unique celebration in the Community of Madrid
The Community of Madrid is preparing for a spectacular commemoration of May 2nd, an event that will not only remember the uprising of the people of Madrid in 1808 but will also offer an unprecedented cultural display. From April 30 to May 3, citizens and visitors will be able to enjoy a series of free activities ranging from concerts to historical reenactments.
One of the most anticipated moments will be the innovative show ‘Madrid in the sky’, where 1,000 drones will illuminate the Madrid night. This show, designed by the Community Board in collaboration with Indra, promises to be a visual delight lasting approximately 12 minutes. Ten scenes reflecting the rich history and culture of the region will be presented, all in the Cuña Verde park in the Latina district, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Aside from the aerial show, the streets of Madrid will transform into a historical stage where the uprising of May 2nd will be reenacted. The Historical-Cultural Association Volunteers of Madrid 1808-1814 will carry out performances that will include parades with horses and carriages, as well as pieces of artillery. The main stages will cover iconic locations such as Calle Alcalá and Puerta del Sol.
You can expect an impressive musical variety during these festive days. In Puente del Rey, artists such as Bely Basarte, Alcalá Norte, and many more will perform. The first day will kick off with Berkana and Los Seminuevos, followed by Bely Basarte and Judeline the next day. The musical climax will arrive on May 2nd with standout performances like those of Joseluis.
Not only will there be modern music; there will also be a First Folklore Meeting featuring representative groups not only from Madrid but also from Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucía, and Aragón. Additionally, there will be film screenings such as the movie ‘Rondallas’, directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.
The official poster for this celebration includes iconic elements linked to Madrid's identity: from the seven stars that adorn its flag to references to cultural figures like Goya. It also incorporates endearing symbols such as cats or sparrows, alongside musical elements that highlight the local cultural richness.
