A new era for the protection of heritage in Madrid
The Government of the Community of Madrid has taken a significant step towards defending its cultural and natural heritage. In an extraordinary meeting held in Tres Cantos, the Governing Council approved a bill that will allow the regional Executive to exercise popular action in cases where historical assets are threatened or public events are sabotaged.
The regulation, which will be presented to the Assembly of Madrid for parliamentary processing, aims to amend several existing laws. Among them is the Law 16/1995, which regulates the protection of the environment and natural resources. This amendment will enable the Government to act in criminal proceedings related to crimes such as forest fires or attacks on the natural environment.
Additionally, the Law 17/1997, focused on public shows and recreational activities, will be adapted. This will allow the Government to intervene in criminal proceedings for crimes that have obstructed events of general interest, such as the recent case of the Vuelta Ciclista a España 2025, whose final stage was interrupted by protesters.
It will not only focus on the environment; modifications will also be made to the Law 8/2023, which protects Madrid's cultural heritage. This action aims to safeguard historical and artistic assets against any type of crime that may compromise their integrity.
Through this initiative, the regional Government seeks not only to protect its cultural and natural assets but also to ensure that public events can take place without interruptions or external threats. The administration had already begun to intervene in cases related to violence against women and terrorism to defend the rights and interests of victims and their families.
With these measures, the Executive led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso reaffirms its commitment to the social and cultural well-being of the people of Madrid. The popular action will not only allow for a more agile response to specific crimes but will also promote greater awareness of the importance of historical and natural heritage among citizens.
