The imminent visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid has unleashed a series of preparations that go beyond the usual security measures. From the moment the ITA Airways Airbus A320 takes off from Rome's Fiumicino airport, a meticulous protocol will be activated to ensure that every detail is taken care of.
A tradition dating back six decades will be an integral part of this visit. Each time a Pope flies to another country, the Vatican sends a telegram to the national leaders of the countries overflown. This gesture, initiated by Paul VI in 1964, symbolizes the closeness and respect of the Vatican towards nations. In this case, when the papal plane enters Spanish airspace, Felipe VI will receive a brief but significant message that includes greetings and blessings for Spain.
As the plane approaches its destination, it will be escorted by two aircraft from the Air and Space Force as part of the military protocol. Upon landing in Madrid, all churches will ring their bells in a collective celebration to welcome the Holy Father. This symbolic act reflects the joy and gratitude for his presence in the country.
Unlike previous visits, the formal ceremony will take place at the Royal Palace, where both Don Felipe and Doña Letizia are expected to be present to receive the Pope. After the initial greetings and the presentation of flowers by local children, there will be a private meeting with the Kings before heading to the Column Hall to greet state and diplomatic authorities.
The day will culminate in two significant events. First, at 18:00 hours, the Pope will visit the 24-hour Emergency and Comprehensive Care Centre of Cáritas Madrid, where he will interact with vulnerable individuals. This meeting underscores his commitment to those in need and will feature prominent musical performances.
Starting at 20:30 hours, there will be a massive vigil with Spanish youth designed as a "festival of faith." This event will include contemporary music, personal testimonies, and even Eucharistic adoration. The Pope's active participation during this gathering promises to be one of the most emotional and anticipated moments for attendees.
