An unprecedented event in Cibeles
This Sunday, June 7th, the Cibeles square will become the epicentre of a religious event that promises to be one of the most attended in Spain. The Corpus Christi mass, presided over by León XIV, will attract thousands of faithful and authorities, who must adhere to a strict dress code to attend this significant ceremony.
The Assembly of Madrid and the City Council have issued clear guidelines on how politicians and guests should present themselves. In particular, emphasis has been placed on women opting for subdued, formal, and discreet outfits. Bright colours such as red or yellow are prohibited, as are patterns that may clash with the solemnity of the event.
Furthermore, white is reserved exclusively for the Holy Father and the concelebrants. This detail is crucial as it is also expected that Queen Letizia, as a prominent Catholic figure, will wear this liturgical colour during the mass.
Despite how simple it may seem to follow these rules, there have been recent cases where some public figures have not met expectations. For example, María Jesús Montero was criticised for her choice of clothing during a previous funeral. Similarly, other politicians such as Yolanda Díaz and Diana Morant were also the subject of negative comments for wearing inappropriate outfits at similar events.
Unlike the female dress code, the rules for men are simpler. They are requested to wear a dark suit accompanied by a white shirt and a tie that is neither loud nor colourful. This uniformity aims to maintain a formal atmosphere in line with the importance of the religious event.
