A new chapter for the FIAS
The 36th edition of the International Festival of Sacred Art (FIAS) promises to be an unforgettable event, with a programme that highlights the figure of master Johann Sebastian Bach. From 29 March to 20 April, Madrid will become the epicentre of ancient music, thanks to the new artistic direction of Josetxu Obregón.
Obregón has designed a programme that not only pays tribute to Bach's sacred works but also explores his influence on European Baroque. In his own words, it is an “honour to take on this challenge in a festival that is a heritage of all Madrileños.” The director emphasises the importance of maintaining rigorous historical criteria in each interpretation.
One of the most notable innovations for this edition is the decentralisation of the festival. The 17 concerts scheduled will take place in various emblematic spaces, such as the Teatros del Canal, the Basilica of San Miguel, and the Royal Coliseum of Carlos III, located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This strategy aims to create a dialogue between music and the rich architectural heritage that characterises the Community.
The FIAS 2026 line-up includes prominent figures from the ancient music world. Among them are names like William Christie, along with his renowned ensemble Les Arts Florissants. Other recognised groups such as the Baroque Orchestra of Seville, and Accademia del Piacere will also participate, as well as the group led by Obregón, known as La Ritirata.
Through this carefully curated artistic selection, the festival seeks not only to attract a specialised audience but also to open its doors to new listeners interested in experiencing the “purity of the original sound.” With this inclusive vision, Josetxu Obregón hopes to further consolidate the FIAS as a cultural reference both within and outside Spain.
