A literary event amidst grand celebrations
The 85th edition of the Madrid Book Fair, taking place from May 29 to June 14, promises to be a unique event due to the overlap with two massive events: the visit of Pope Leo XIV and a series of concerts by popular Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny. This overlap has generated expectations and logistical challenges that the organisers are addressing with determination.
Eva Orúe, director of the Fair, has acknowledged that this year will be particularly demanding. In a recent conference, she mentioned that the second weekend of the event will be critical, as the Pope will preside over the Holy Mass of Corpus Christi at Cibeles, very close to El Retiro Park where the fair is held. “We know that these events will influence how our literary gathering unfolds,” Orúe stated.
Despite the anticipated challenges, Orúe emphasised the importance of commitment from authors, exhibitors, and visitors. “We need their enthusiasm and loyalty more than ever,” she urged potential attendees. The organisation is working to minimise any negative impact on access to the event, although there are still no definitive details on how mobility will be managed during those critical days.
Despite the logistical complications, the official opening will feature the prominent presence of Queen Letizia on May 29 at 11:00 AM. This event symbolises not only the formal start of the fair but also an effort to keep alive a literary tradition rich in history and culture.
Orúe also emphasised that this year will seek to incorporate a lighter tone to the event. “We are in a country whose hit is a humorous book like Don Quixote. We want to highlight that with good words and good humour, we can create meaningful literature,” she commented, suggesting that there will be activities designed to foster a festive atmosphere among attendees.
As the start of this emblematic literary fair approaches, both organisers and participants are ready to face the unexpected. With a programme intact so far and a literary community willing to adapt to changing circumstances, all signs point to this edition being remembered not only for its cultural content but also for its ability to unite people amidst the urban bustle.
