An Emotional Journey in Alternative Theatre
The Sala Cuarta Pared, a benchmark of alternative theatre in Madrid, celebrates its 40th anniversary with the return of one of its most acclaimed shows: ‘Murmullo’. This play, which is part of the ‘Triptych of Life’, is once again presented to the public from Thursday to Saturday at 20:30, and will be running until 2nd May.
‘Murmullo’ tells the story of four friends who gather on a terrace after attending the wake of a companion. Amid laughter and memories, one of them recalls an ancient Persian tale titled ‘The Language of the Birds’, written by the Sufi mystic Farid al Din Attar. This medieval story recounts how a group of birds seeks a legendary bird king to find answers to their existential chaos. Through a humorous and profound analysis of the tale, the protagonists embark on their own journey towards overcoming grief.
Aitana Sar, director of ‘Murmullo’, has shared her reflections on the play during an interview on the Km0 programme of esRadio. According to Sar, “each character tries to find different paths and roles in the face of death”, emphasising “the need for the other” as a fundamental element to cling to life. This approach resonates deeply with audiences, who find comfort and hope in the interactions between the characters.
‘Murmullo’ is a joint creation between the author Miguel Valentín and Aitana Sar, who have worked together to bring this emotional theatrical piece to life. The actors Nataliya Andru, Marina Herranz, Andrés Picazo, and Fran Vélez masterfully portray the characters who traverse this beautiful journey from darkness to joy.
As ‘Murmullo’ returns to the stage, both critics and audiences are expected to respond positively to this sincere exploration of grief and friendship. The play not only invites reflection on personal losses but also on how sharing those experiences can be a path towards collective healing.
