What an Extraction System Really Does
The short answer: to ensure your employees don’t end up breathing what they shouldn’t. The long answer is much more interesting.
Depending on the sector, the pollutants generated in a workspace can be very different from one another. Wood dust in a carpentry shop is not the same as welding fumes in a metallurgical workshop, or chemical gases in a pharmaceutical laboratory. Each of those pollutants requires a different approach, and that’s where the design of the extraction system comes into play.
In general terms, these systems perform three main functions:

Extraction Booths and Enclosures
These are used when the contaminating process can be physically contained. Think of a paint booth, a developing room, or a closed sanding station. The worker operates inside or in front of a sealed area where the air is extracted in a controlled manner. Greater containment, greater effectiveness.
Recirculated Air Filtration Systems
In some cases, the extracted air is not expelled outside but is filtered and returned to the workspace. This requires high-efficiency filters, such as activated carbon or HEPA filters, and is used when expulsion outside is not viable or when heat retention in the enclosure is desired. Very common in pharmaceutical industries or in urban areas with emission restrictions.

Here comes the part that no one wants to read but everyone should. In Spain, the Occupational Risk Prevention Act and Royal Decree 486/1997 on workplaces require ensuring adequate air quality conditions. Furthermore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (INSST) publishes the professional exposure limit values (VLA) for hundreds of substances.
Non-compliance not only implies financial penalties. In case of an accident or occupational disease resulting from poor ventilation, liability can be civil and even criminal. So the “we’ll look into it later” strategy is not particularly advisable.
