Madrid promotes an electrical plan for the Henares Corridor in response to growing industrial demand

A new energy boost for the Henares Corridor

The Community of Madrid has launched an ambitious plan to reinforce electrical infrastructure in the Henares Corridor, a region that is emerging as one of the main industrial and technological hubs in southern Europe. This project aims not only to ensure a reliable energy supply but also to support the sustained growth of this metropolitan area.

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Land Planning, Rafael García, recently visited the construction of the new electrical substation in Nueva Meco. This facility, which will operate at 220 kilovolts (kV), is a fundamental part of the plan and is expected to be operational by the end of this year. The substation is a key component within a broader set that includes two other facilities in Alcalá de Henares: Complutum and Cisneros.

This electrical reinforcement responds to the significant increase in energy demand, driven by emerging sectors such as data centres and advanced industry. The new infrastructures are designed to alleviate pressure on the current networks, which are already operating at critical levels, and to facilitate access to new energy capacities along the Alcalá–Meco–A2 axis.

The benefits derived from this project will extend not only to Meco and Alcalá de Henares but also to nearby towns such as Anchuelo and Los Santos de la Humosa. Furthermore, a positive impact on the entire electrical system of the eastern metropolitan area is anticipated, benefiting cities like Torrejón de Ardoz, San Fernando de Henares, and Coslada.

Aside from the physical development of these infrastructures, the Community has implemented significant regulatory reforms to streamline the administrative processes related to electrical projects. Among these reforms are the law on measures for balanced environmental development and the regional decree on high voltage. These initiatives have allowed for a reduction of up to two years in the time required to obtain authorisations.

Thanks to these proactive actions, Madrid is positioning itself as a leader in electrical authorisations during this legislative term. The regional government emphasises that these initiatives are crucial not only to ensure a stable supply but also to attract investments that further strengthen its role as the economic engine of the country.
