A Call to Action from New York
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, has made a strong call to the central Government to implement an urgent reduction of VAT on electricity, gas, and fuels. This request arises amid a surge in prices caused by the recent war in Iran, which is severely affecting Spanish families.
During her institutional visit to New York, where she met with investment funds and American startups, Ayuso emphasised that the increase in costs is having a direct impact on household economies. "It is affecting all Spanish families greatly, severely," she stated. The Madrid president also highlighted that while citizens are facing these economic challenges, the Government's tax revenue has reached historic levels.
Despite the outcry for a VAT reduction, the Sumar party, a partner of the PSOE in the national Government, has rejected this proposal. Instead, they have suggested implementing price controls as a measure to mitigate the impact of the international conflict. However, no concrete decisions have been made in this regard so far.
Díaz Ayuso also advocated for implementing open liberal measures, similar to those adopted during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to her, these strategies are effective and could prevent Spain from becoming a poor and unattractive country for entrepreneurs and young people. "These are the ones that are working anywhere in the world," she argued.
Despite the concerns expressed by Ayuso and other political leaders about rising prices due to the conflict in the Middle East, the Executive led by Pedro Sánchez has not taken immediate action. The third vice president and Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, urged calm by stating that "the situation is far from" what occurred during the war in Ukraine.
As this international crisis progresses and its effects are increasingly felt closer to home in Spain, it remains to be seen how the Government will respond to these urgent demands and whether it will implement any effective strategy to protect the affected citizens.
