A new approach to elderly care
The Community of Madrid is taking a significant step towards the future of teleassistance with the implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system that promises to revolutionise the care of elderly and dependent individuals. This innovative model aims not only to react to problems but to anticipate them, thereby improving the quality of life for those who live alone or have special needs.
The new digital ecosystem will be installed in selected homes and will consist of a series of smart sensors that will monitor users' daily routines. These devices will collect data on habits such as sleep patterns, frequency of bathroom visits, and meal times. The information gathered will be analysed by an AI capable of identifying significant changes in behaviour that could indicate problems such as cognitive decline or social isolation.
Óscar Álvarez, general director of Elderly and Dependent Care, emphasises that this approach will enable the activation of preventive actions. For example, if it is detected that an elderly person suddenly stops getting up at night, this could be an early indication of an infection or a psychological issue. Quick intervention can make a difference in the treatment and progression of the patient.
The pilot phase of the project will begin in the coming months and will include 200 households where these sensors will be implemented. This sample will serve to evaluate the effectiveness of the system before its full deployment across the regional network. It is expected that this technology will not only improve home care but also promote personal autonomy.
In addition to individual analysis, the study will also consider comparisons between urban and rural users to understand how the environment affects their habits and needs. This will allow for the adjustment of services offered according to geographical and social particularities, thus ensuring more personalised care.
As this initiative progresses, it is expected to radically transform the current model of teleassistance. With advanced technologies already implemented since 2025, such as motion detectors and automated systems for dispensing medication, this new approach promises to provide comprehensive support to those who need it most. The combination of predictive analysis with a dedicated professional team ensures that each user receives care tailored to their specific circumstances.
