An alarming situation
The Valdemoro Penitentiary Centre is at the centre of a storm following a report by the Independent and Civil Servants Union (CSIF) about a concerning rat infestation that has taken control of critical areas, including nursing, treatment rooms, and pharmacy. This situation has left workers and inmates on high alert, as the rodents are not only visible but also roam freely in spaces where medications are handled and medical care is provided.
The constant presence of these animals has been reported for several days, leading the union to describe the scenario as a “serious health risk”. The droppings and urine left by the rats create conditions incompatible with any health facility, putting both inmates and healthcare staff at risk. CSIF has emphasised that dry faeces can be a vehicle for dangerous pathogens to humans.
In light of this crisis, CSIF has formally requested the prison director to conduct an immediate review of the affected facilities. Additionally, they have demanded an “urgent inspection”, supervised by the centre's management, to assess the extent of the problem and take effective measures. The union has also called for the immediate hiring of a pest control company to carry out comprehensive rat extermination.
Not only is extermination required; CSIF also demands thorough cleaning and disinfection efforts in all affected areas. These actions must be carried out by certified companies to ensure a safe environment for both public employees and the incarcerated population. Failure to act could result in infections and serious illnesses among the inmates.
Finally, the union has urged the prison management to act with complete transparency regarding the measures taken and the results obtained after inspections. The overall health of all those who live or work within the facility must be a priority, especially when it comes to a space intended to provide medical assistance.
