A sustained leadership in waiting times
The Community of Madrid has been recognised for the fourth consecutive year as the autonomous region with the shortest waiting time for surgical operations, according to recent data from the central government. As of December 31, 2025, the average waiting time for a surgical intervention in Madrid stands at 50 days, a figure significantly lower than the national average of 121 days. In comparison, regions like Catalonia face delays of up to 142 days.
Not only surgeries stand out in the Madrid healthcare system. The region also leads the ranking in waiting times for consultations with specialist doctors, where patients must wait only 68 days. This number sharply contrasts with the national average of 102 days, and is significantly better than the figures reported by Navarra and Catalonia, where waits are 152 and 120 days respectively.
Under the leadership of the Executive headed by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Madrid has implemented a series of strategies that include significant investments in technology and professional training. By 2026, a historic investment of over 11 billion euros is expected, representing 36% of the annual budget. This economic injection is aimed at further strengthening its public healthcare system.
As Madrid moves towards the future, construction has begun on the City of Health, an ambitious project that will involve an additional investment of 1 billion euros. This healthcare complex will not only be the largest in Europe but will also incorporate the latest in medical technology.
It is noteworthy that six Madrid hospitals have renewed their status among the top ten in the country, with La Paz and Gregoria Marañón being the top two ranked. These achievements reflect not only a commitment to quality care but also effective coordination among medical teams.
As other territories struggle with long waiting lists and limited resources, Madrid positions itself as a model to follow in terms of healthcare efficiency. With a clear focus on innovation and continuous improvement, it seems to be charting a solid path towards a future where all its citizens can quickly access essential medical services.
