A significant advance in Madrid's healthcare
The Community of Madrid has achieved a notable decrease in healthcare waiting lists, reaching an average of 46.65 days for surgical interventions in April. This figure represents a 6.3% reduction compared to the same month last year and places the region well below the national average, which stands at 121 days.
Despite the complicated context marked by a medical strike against the Ministry of Health, Madrid has managed to maintain this positive trend for four consecutive months. The Ministry of Health has highlighted that the total number of patients waiting more than six months for surgery has been reduced to 688 people, which equates to 0.8% of the structural list.
Not only have surgical interventions seen improvements. Outpatient consultations have also experienced a significant decrease in waiting times. In April, the average wait for a first consultation was 61.17 days, improving by 8.1% compared to the previous year. Likewise, diagnostic tests have recorded an average wait reduced to 53.9 days, representing a year-on-year decrease of 12.8%.
Despite the current success in reducing waiting lists, Madrid faces the additional challenge arising from over 8,400 suspended surgeries and more than 174,000 cancelled consultations, a direct consequence of the medical strike. The Ministry continues to work to mitigate these effects and further improve access to healthcare services.
