A call for solidarity in Madrid

With the arrival of Holy Week, the government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso has launched an initiative that combines altruism and culture. From 16 March, Madrid will host a blood and plasma donation marathon, designed to ensure that hospitals have the necessary reserves in light of the usual drop in donations during the holidays.

The current situation at the regional Transfusion Centre is critical, especially for blood groups 0+ and B-. An urgent call is being made to citizens who belong to these groups, as well as those with types A+, A-, and 0-, to come forward to donate in the coming days. The goal is to prevent reserves from falling to alarming levels.

As part of the effort to encourage citizen participation, the Transfusion Centre has decided to raffle two tickets for the highly anticipated concert of artist Rosalía, scheduled for 30 March at the Movistar Arena. This strategy aims not only to motivate donors but also to celebrate their generosity.

In addition to the traditional process, the technique known as plasma donation is being promoted, which allows for quick recovery and makes it possible to donate again in just 48 hours. Those interested can request an appointment by calling 91 301 72 40 or emailing [email protected].

Throughout the year, the Madrid health system processes around 240,000 units of blood. During seasonal campaigns like this one, it is expected to collect between 9,000 and 10,000 additional bags, which are essential to meet healthcare needs. The plasma obtained is not only used in direct transfusions; about 85% is allocated to the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture essential medicines.

Donate blood and contribute to the collective well-being: being of legal age, weighing more than 50 kilos, and being in good health are the only necessary requirements. The regional government emphasizes that everyone should consider doing this at least twice a year, thus ensuring a robust and efficient healthcare system.
