A controlled environment for everyone's safety

The 14 Spaniards who were disembarked from the MV Hondius cruise are currently under strict surveillance at the Gómez Ulla Central Defence Hospital, where they spent their first night in an environment that, according to reports, remains calm and controlled. This group has been classified as 'healthy contacts' after being exposed to a case of hantavirus during their voyage.

Since their admission, all passengers have undergone blood PCR tests, which will be repeated every seven days as long as they continue to test negative. Additionally, their temperature is taken twice a day, ensuring constant monitoring of their health. The quarantine officially began on May 6, marking the start of a period that could extend up to 42 days, in accordance with WHO recommendations on the maximum incubation time for the virus.

The medical team responsible for caring for these patients consists of nurses and military aides who work 12-hour shifts. According to statements from the Satse union, each shift includes at least one military nurse and one aide dedicated exclusively to these cases. This measure aims to minimize any potential risk by preventing healthcare staff from interacting with other patients in different areas of the hospital.

Despite the controlled environment and the preparation of the medical staff, Satse has made an urgent call to facilitate access to psychological support, both for the patients and for the workers involved in their care. The emotional situation can be challenging after having been isolated for several days on the ship before arriving at the hospital.

Throughout their stay on the 13th floor of Gómez Ulla, where only authorized professionals have access, the patients receive regular meals according to the schedules established by the medical centre. This helps maintain a normal routine within the exceptional context they are experiencing. The assigned individual rooms are also a fundamental part of ensuring their well-being during this critical period.
