Urgent Call for Solidarity in Madrid
With the imminent arrival of Pope Leo XIV in the Spanish capital, the Community of Madrid has made an appeal to its citizens to join a blood donation campaign. This effort aims to ensure that hospitals have sufficient reserves during the days of June 6 to 9, when mass events are expected in iconic locations such as Plaza de Lima and Plaza de Cibeles.
Health authorities have warned about potential complications that could arise from traffic due to the influx of visitors, which could hinder access to transfusion centres. The Health Department has emphasized that this initiative is a preventive measure to avoid any critical shortages during those days.
The Transfusion Centre has reported that the blood group ‘A-‘ is currently at red level, indicating an urgent need for donations. On the other hand, the group ‘B-‘ is classified as yellow level, suggesting that donations are required in the coming days. The other blood groups are at green levels, allowing for regular donations.
Daily, Madrid hospitals require approximately 900 bags of fresh blood, vital for treatments and surgical interventions. In total, around 240,000 donations are made annually, with each surgical intervention capable of consuming up to 20 donations. To be a donor, it is necessary to meet certain requirements: being between 18 and 65 years old, weighing more than 50 kilos, and being in good health.
The process for donating is quick and simple; it takes just about 20 minutes, and can be repeated every eight weeks. However, there are limitations: men can donate up to four times a year and women up to three. Those interested in participating can go to the Transfusion Centre or to the mobile units available throughout the community.
