A call for Madrid's solidarity
The Community of Madrid is facing an alarming situation in its blood reserves, with six blood types on red alert. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the regional president, made an urgent call to citizens during the II Day of Primary Care, urging Madrilenians to donate life and help reverse this crisis.
Reserves have fallen to 46% of their optimal capacity following the Easter period. Currently, the stock stands at just 2276 bags, far below the necessary minimum of 5000. This drastic decrease is due not only to the drop in donations during the holidays but also to the lack of the expected rebound this week.
The daily demand is pressing: 900 daily donations are required to meet hospital needs. Transfusions are vital for patients arriving in emergencies, those undergoing surgeries, or those needing specific treatments. Blood is an irreplaceable resource; it cannot be manufactured and its components have an expiry date.
In addition to the regional Transfusion Centre located in Valdebernardo, there are 30 hospitals where citizens can donate blood. Mobile units from both the Community and the Red Cross are also operational. Donating blood is a simple process that takes approximately 20 minutes. The requirements are minimal: be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos, and be in good health.
