The City Council of Rivas Vaciamadrid has initiated the project 'Weaving Community Networks' to address unwanted loneliness. The initiative aims to promote mutual support among neighbours and improve the emotional well-being of participants.
Unwanted loneliness has become a growing problem in many communities, and Rivas Vaciamadrid has decided to take action. Through the ‘Weaving Community Networks’ programme, the City Council seeks to prevent social isolation by creating bonds between neighbours. This initiative, driven by the Social Services of the Frida Kahlo centre, aims to turn citizens into active agents who can detect and support those facing loneliness.
The pilot project was carried out in the area of Camino Viejo de Rivas, where a volunteer was appointed to identify potential cases of isolation. Four additional volunteers joined the effort, providing individualised support to four selected neighbours. Before starting their work, the volunteers received specialised training in areas such as active listening, empathy, and emotional management, thus ensuring appropriate and effective care.
Starting in May, home visits and periodic meetings began to be held in order to offer personalised follow-up. According to data provided by the City Council, by the end of this first phase of the project, a notable reduction in the feeling of loneliness was observed among participants, as well as a general improvement in their emotional well-being.
The positive evaluation of the programme has led the City Council to plan its continuation. Starting in September, monthly group meetings will be organised to maintain and strengthen the relationships established during these months. The aim is to continue building a community network that fosters mutual support among neighbours.
Local administration emphasises that combating unwanted loneliness requires more than just public intervention; it is essential to have the active participation of the community. Small everyday gestures can have a significant impact on the lives of those suffering from social isolation.
As this innovative project progresses, Rivas Vaciamadrid demonstrates how community initiatives can transform complex social realities and improve the quality of life in its neighbourhoods.
