An event that sets the standard in innovation
The Community of Madrid has reaffirmed its status as a global leader in technology and entrepreneurship with the recent celebration of the South Summit Madrid 2026. This event, co-organised by IE University and held in the innovative space of La Nave, centred around Artificial Intelligence, under the slogan AI Convergence. The closing remarks were delivered by Rocío Albert, the councillor for Economy, Finance and Employment, who highlighted the importance of the event for the region's economic future.
The figures speak for themselves: the South Summit is estimated to have generated nearly 42 million euros in economic activity for Madrid, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year. This growth benefits not only large corporations but also boosts vital sectors such as hospitality, transport, and local commerce.
Almost half of the finalist startups in the national competition come from Madrid. Out of a total of 49 Spanish startups qualified for the grand final, 19 are from Madrid. This success is a direct result of a favourable economic environment characterised by low taxation and strong legal security.
Not only the major cities shone at this event; seven municipalities in Madrid presented their technological initiatives. For example, Móstoles showcased its urban accelerator designed to attract talent, while Torrejón de Ardoz presented its PolicIA app, focused on improving public safety through AI. Additionally, other municipalities such as Pozuelo de Alarcón, Alcalá de Henares, and Leganés exhibited innovative projects that reflect a collective commitment to a more inclusive digital future.
At the national level, Madrid accounts for approximately 63% of all investment related to Artificial Intelligence and boasts a notable 30% of companies that have already integrated this technology into their operations. The region not only hosts half of the country's data centres but is also digitising its public services through advanced tools such as the SOL avatar.
Through the Digital Talent Plan and various grants for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the regional government has injected nearly 10 million euros into over 85 innovative AI-based projects. These initiatives aim not only to foster a robust business ecosystem but also to ensure that Madrid continues to be a global benchmark in technology and innovation.
