There are footballers who reach the elite because everything went well for them from the start. And then there is Declan Rice, who at 14 received the news that Chelsea did not want him, cried at his home in Kingston, and a decade later became the most expensive English player in history. If that isn’t a story of overcoming adversity, let someone come down and explain it better.
But beyond the free-kick goals that left Santiago Bernabéu speechless (well, at the Emirates, but Courtois surely felt the pain just the same), there is a personal life that has given as much to talk about as his left foot. A partner since adolescence, a son named Jude, and a public defence against online harassment that has turned him into more than just an elite midfielder.
From Kingston to the elite: the origins of a star
Declan Rice was born on January 14, 1999 in Kingston upon Thames, a borough in southwest London. At just 26 years old, he is a key player for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta and a regular in the England national team. He stands at 1.88 metres, weighs around 84 kilos, and his right foot has caused nightmares for more than one goalkeeper.
His family roots have a significant Irish component: his paternal grandparents are from Douglas, County Cork, in Ireland. That connection allowed him to start his international career with the Irish national team, before making the definitive step to the Three Lions in 2019. But we will talk about that later.
At just seven years old, in 2006, he joined the Chelsea academy. It seemed like the beginning of a London fairytale. Seven seasons training at Stamford Bridge, learning the fundamentals of football at one of the best academies in the world. Until, at the age of 14, he was told he didn’t make the cut.
The Chelsea rejection that changed everything
His father, Sean Rice, was the one who broke the news. Declan came home from school (he studied at Grey Court School in Richmond) and faced the reality: Chelsea had rejected him. Tears were inevitable. Rice himself recalled it years later in an interview: “I felt like it was all over.”
The official reason was the lack of physicality. He was a gangly teenager, and he described himself as a “Bambi on ice” because of his running style after his growth spurt. But that night, before the tears dried, he already had an invitation from Fulham to train. And the next day, the phone rang with an offer that would change his life: West Ham United was calling.
Interestingly, Rice rejected Fulham, which was literally close to his home, to join West Ham, much further away. He moved to a players' residence in Romford, left his school, his neighbourhood, and his comfort zone. At 14 years old. That decision says a lot about the character that would later lead him to captain a Premier League team.
West Ham: from discarded youth to historic captain
At West Ham, things were not an immediate bed of roses either. Terry Westley, the academy director, admitted that in his first year “there wasn’t much to talk about” and that he could understand why Chelsea let him go. Even the coaches were divided on whether to offer him a scholarship to continue at the club.
But Rice had something that couldn’t be trained: mentality. He was repositioned from midfielder to centre-back, and when he returned to midfield after growing physically, everything clicked. His ability to read the game, intercept balls, and distribute with precision began to stand out dramatically.
In December 2015, he signed his first professional contract. He made his first-team debut on May 21, 2017, coming on in the 91st minute against Burnley. Not glamorous, but it was the beginning. By the age of 20, he was already an occasional captain. In May 2022, he officially received the armband.
The 2022-23 season was his breakthrough in East London. He led West Ham to win the Conference League, the club's first European title since Bobby Moore lifted trophies in 1965. Rice was named Player of the Tournament. With 245 appearances as an hammer, he had etched his name in the club's history.
The record transfer to Arsenal
In July 2023, Arsenal paid £105 million (around €116 million) for his services. He became the most expensive signing in the club's history and the most expensive English player of all time, matching the record set by Jack Grealish.
Rice himself confessed that the price made him nervous: “You’re a human being for whom they’ve just paid £116 million, and that doesn’t seem very normal to me. I told myself: be yourself.” And that’s what he has done.
In his first season, he contributed with 7 goals and 8 assists in the Premier League. In the second, he made an even greater qualitative leap. On April 8, 2025, in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid, he scored two stunning free-kicks in the same match, something no player had achieved in the knockout stage of the competition. Courtois must still be reviewing the footage.
Lauren Fryer: the partner who has been with him since school
If there is one thing that defines Declan Rice's personal life, it is stability. His partner, Lauren Fryer, has been by his side since they were both 17 years old. They met while studying in Chessington, south of London, just as Declan was starting to stand out in the youth ranks of West Ham.
Lauren was born in June 1998, a year older than Declan, and is currently 27 years old. From the beginning, she has maintained a low profile, away from the media circus that usually surrounds the partners of top-level footballers. While other WAGs (as the wives and girlfriends of footballers are known in England) seek the limelight and advertising contracts, Lauren has preferred to focus her life on raising their child and maintaining her privacy.
In August 2022, the couple welcomed their first child, a boy they named Jude. The news was made public in a very footballer-like way: Rice appeared at a match with a new tattoo on his arm showing the baby's name and date of birth, August 7, 2022. No official statements or exclusives in gossip magazines.
In addition to Jude, the family shares their home with Raffa, a dog that Declan gifted to Lauren at Christmas as a special gesture.
The public defence that moved half the internet
But not everything has been rosy in the story of Rice and Fryer. In 2024, Lauren was the victim of a brutal online harassment campaign. Anonymous users (the usual brave ones, hiding behind an avatar) began posting fatphobic and misogynistic comments about her appearance, questioning whether Rice “deserved better” and that he had “low standards” for being with her.
The attacks were so intense that Lauren made a drastic decision: she deleted all her photos from Instagram and set her X (Twitter) account to private. For someone who already led a life away from the spotlight, it was a devastating blow.
Declan Rice's response was firm and left no room for interpretation. He publicly defended his partner with a message that went viral: “My wife is the love of my life, and there is no one better for me. She has been with me since I was nobody.”
Those words sparked a wave of support. Rebekah Vardy, wife of striker Jamie Vardy, described the treatment of Lauren as “truly disgusting.” Other figures from sport and entertainment joined in the condemnation. Rice also disabled comments on his own Instagram as a protective measure.
The episode repeated itself in April 2025, after his spectacular double against Real Madrid. The goals put Rice back in the headlines, and with him, the attacks on Lauren returned. She once again chose to temporarily disappear from social media. A situation that speaks much more about digital toxicity than about the couple themselves.
National team, controversies, and the switch from Ireland to England
Rice played with the youth teams of Ireland thanks to his grandparents' nationality. He made his debut with the senior Irish national team in March 2018, in a friendly against Turkey. But in February 2019, he announced that he was switching national teams to represent England.
The decision was not well received in Ireland, as is logical. There were criticisms, reproaches, and a few heated comments. Rice has always explained that it was a thoughtful and personal decision, but he acknowledged that the process affected his family.
With the Three Lions, he has accumulated over 64 international matches. He participated in the Euro 2020 (held in 2021), the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the 2024 Euro in Germany, where England fell in the final against Spain. In March 2024, he made his debut as England captain in a match against Belgium.
