If you type "Pedro Pascal" into Google, the first thing that appears is his Wikipedia entry. And it makes perfect sense: his real name is José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal, he was born in Santiago, Chile on April 2, 1975, and at this point, talking about him is to talk about one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, Gladiator II, The Fantastic Four… The man doesn’t stop. But beyond the characters, there is a fascinating personal story that very few people know completely.
A Chilean who fled the dictatorship
Shortly after his birth, when he was only nine months old, his family obtained political asylum in Denmark, because his parents were supporters of President Salvador Allende and opponents of the dictatorship. This is not a minor detail: Pedro Pascal came into the world in a turbulent Chile and his first months of life literally took place in transit.
His mother, Verónica Pascal, was a child psychologist and a cousin of Andrés Pascal Allende, leader of the MIR in Chile, who had to hide in Pedro's family home after Augusto Pinochet's military coup. And he doesn’t say this with shame precisely: he shares it with pride and with that sense of humour that characterises him.
He has a younger brother named Nicolás who is a doctor and lives in Chile. And the youngest in the family, Lux, is also an actress. It was Pedro himself who introduced Lux as a trans woman in February 2021, in a public gesture that generated much conversation and that he took on with total naturalness. His older sister, Javiera, works in television production in Latin America.
