A farewell that is a new beginning
This Thursday, the heart of Madrid vibrated with a massive celebration marking the relocation of the iconic Café Central to its new home at the Ateneo. The day, known as Funeral and Resurrection of Jazz, brought together hundreds of fans, musicians, and families who joined in a parade filled with joy and music.
From the Plaza del Ángel to Calle Santa Catalina, attendees not only accompanied the café in its move but also celebrated its legacy. With instruments in hand, musicians filled the streets with melodies that resonated amidst laughter and dancing. This event was not just a farewell; it was a tribute to the history of the venue, which has been a pillar of Madrid's jazz scene since 1982.
Despite the difficulties faced in renewing their rental contract, the organisers emphasised that this change does not signify an end. “It is not an end, but a transition,” they stated weeks before the event. Juantxu Bohigues, one of the café's most beloved workers, expressed from the balcony: They have not defeated us. Long live Café Central!. These words resonated among those present as a symbol of hope and unity.
Café Central has witnessed over 14,000 performances throughout its decades at Plaza del Ángel. Its temporary closure has left a deep mark on the Madrid musical and cultural community. However, this move to the Ateneo presents an opportunity to revitalise its essence and continue providing space for new talents.
As the parade progressed, social media was flooded with images and videos capturing the collective joy. Attendees shared their experiences under the slogan: “Massive, joyful, free.” This phrase perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the event; a celebration where every musical note was a reminder of the lasting impact this place has on local culture.
