A journey through time and water
The public company Canal de Isabel II has launched an ambitious agenda to commemorate its 175th anniversary, which will be celebrated on June 18th. Aiming to bring its history closer to citizens, the company has designed a series of activities that will not only be limited to the capital but will also tour over thirty municipalities in the region.
Among the most notable initiatives are two travelling exhibitions. The first, titled ‘A vertical river’, was inaugurated in Las Rozas de Madrid and is especially aimed at younger audiences. This exhibition features sixteen display cases presenting figures made of plasticine, each representing key moments in the history of the Canal from its foundation to the present day.
An iconic scene recreates the historic moment when Minister José Posada Herrera told Queen Isabel II: ‘Madam, we have been fortunate to see a river standing up’, as he observed the waters of the Lozoya River reaching Madrid for the first time in 1858. Each figure is accompanied by informative texts explaining the most significant milestones of the Canal.
The second exhibition, ‘We drive the future of Madrid’, presents outdoor photographic totems that will showcase historical and contemporary images related to the Canal's infrastructure. From the initial works to major projects like the El Atazar dam, this exhibition aims to illustrate both past achievements and the current technological advancements used by the company to manage this vital resource.
Starting on March 12th and 13th, these exhibitions will begin their tour through other municipalities. The first stops will be Arganda del Rey and San Sebastián de los Reyes, where they will remain until the end of the month. As the calendar progresses, new locations will be announced that will have the opportunity to enjoy these educational displays.
With this initiative, Canal de Isabel II not only celebrates its rich history but also seeks to engage local communities in a dialogue about the importance of water and its sustainable management. The exhibitions are designed to be accessible and educational, thereby fostering greater awareness of an essential resource for all.
