An incident that shook local culture
Last Saturday, a cultural event in Collado Villalba became the epicentre of a controversy that led to the resignation of Noelia R. Díaz Vaca, Councillor for Women in the City Council and member of the Popular Party. During the performance of Being a Woman, a satirical monologue scheduled to commemorate 8M, Díaz Vaca interrupted the performance claiming that its content was "a lack of respect." This act provoked a wave of criticism and ultimately her resignation from office.
In the midst of the performance, Díaz Vaca took to the stage and declared: "Excuse me, but this play and this theatre ends here." Her intervention was recorded and quickly spread across social media, intensifying reactions both for and against. In response to the criticism received, the councillor offered public apologies, acknowledging that her reaction was not appropriate and stating that she should have acted with more calmness.
The incident did not go unnoticed by opposition parties. The local PSOE described the action as an "improper act of censorship" for a public institution, especially during an event dedicated to women's rights and freedoms. The PSOE spokesperson emphasized that interrupting a performance due to its content is a clear violation of freedom of expression.
For its part, Más Madrid also condemned what happened, demanding the immediate resignation of Díaz Vaca. Manuela Bergerot, the party's spokesperson in the Assembly, harshly criticized the councillor for what she considered an unacceptable attempt to silence artistic proposals.
Despite her public apologies where she stated that she firmly believes in freedom of expression as an essential principle in democracy, Díaz Vaca decided to resign from her position to take responsibility for her actions. In a message posted on social media, she reiterated her commitment to fundamental values but admitted that her way of acting was not correct.
This episode has opened a broader debate about the limits between respect for personal opinions and artistic freedom. Various sectors have emphasized that art should be a safe space to question ideas and provoke social reflection without fear of reprisals or censorship.
