An attack that shocks the university community
Complutense University of Madrid is on high alert following a violent incident that occurred last Friday at 5:30 PM. Approximately 30 hooded individuals, many with their faces covered, stormed the faculties of Political Science and Sociology, creating an atmosphere of tension and fear among students and teaching staff.
During their passage through the facilities, the attackers not only shouted at several present, but also caused significant damage. They focused particularly on tearing down posters related to the celebration of International Women's Day, as well as activist banners. Their aim seemed to be the placement of a banner containing a provocative message linked to far-right groups.
Fortunately, the academic staff acted quickly to prevent the banner from being placed and managed to expel the aggressors from the building. However, the material damage was significant, especially in the social classroom designated for students. University authorities have filed a formal complaint and are assessing the consequences of the attack.
This violent act coincides with preparations for the 8M demonstrations, leading many to interpret the action as a deliberate attempt to intimidate both students and teaching staff. In an official statement, it is noted that these attacks are part of a systematic offensive by far-right groups, who seek to silence the demands of the feminist movement and undermine fundamental rights within the university setting.
In light of this alarming situation, the deans have called on the Rectorate to ensure safety on campus. They have also urged the Community of Madrid to publicly condemn this type of violence and provide adequate resources to prevent future incidents. The platform ‘UCM for the Public’ has called on all members of the university community to defend their space as one that is safe and free.
As the mobilisations for International Women's Day approach, this attack highlights not only the current challenges faced by public universities in Spain but also the urgent need to build spaces where respect prevails and critical thinking is fostered. The academic community has expressed its firm commitment to these fundamental causes.
