A Unique Encounter Between Art and Nature
From 14 to 19 April, Matadero Madrid will be the stage for the second edition of the Biophest Festival, an event that promises to fuse art, science, and nature into an unforgettable experience. This festival, which focuses on biophilia, aims to strengthen the bond between people and their natural environment through a varied programme that includes workshops, film, artistic installations, and meetings.
Under the direction of Elena Páez, an expert in urban botany, and Eva F. Cortés, a specialist in cultural communication, Biophest is developed within the Intermediae programme of Matadero Madrid. This programme is designed to promote cultural initiatives that have a significant social and ecological impact.
Starting from 17 April, Nave Una will host several installations accessible to the public that invite reflection on our relationship with nature. Among the highlighted works is Photosynthesis, an innovative proposal that explores how plants can be nourished by images instead of light. Another notable installation is Chemical Calls of Care II, which investigates communication between humans and plant species through sensory stimuli.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy Oasis Improbable, inspired by the garden of filmmaker Derek Jarman, along with an exhibition dedicated to local agricultural varieties, raising important questions about biodiversity loss.
Not only will the artistic installations take centre stage; there will also be film screenings such as The Garden (1990), The Secret Life of Plants (1978), and the contemporary documentary Sembradoras de vida (2019). These films offer various perspectives on how we interact with our natural environment.
Besides film, the festival will include practical workshops aimed at families and guided tours of natural spaces near Matadero Madrid, such as the Manzanares River or the Crystal Palace Greenhouse in Arganzuela. These activities are designed to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the urban natural landscape.
Through the Biophest 2024 Festival, Madrid not only celebrates its cultural wealth but also its vital connection with nature. This event is a unique opportunity to explore new ways of understanding our plant environment while enjoying contemporary art.
