A recognition event for bravery and commitment
This Saturday, the Community of Madrid will be the scene of a significant event highlighting the value of the struggle for freedom and human rights. The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will award the Gold Medal to María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure, and the International Medal to Edmundo González Urrutia, the elected president of Venezuela in exile.
The ceremony will take place at the Royal Post House, where both awardees will receive these honours in the presence of the Government Council. This event is scheduled for 17:30 and promises to be an emotional moment that underscores Madrid's commitment to democratic values.
María Corina Machado has been recognised not only for her bravery in confronting an authoritarian regime but also for her recent distinction as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize last October. This award was given in recognition of her tireless work in defence of democratic rights and her quest for a peaceful transition in Venezuela.
The regional government has emphasised her crucial role as an unwavering defender of human rights, which has earned her this prestigious award. Additionally, the Friday before the main event, she will also receive the Gold Key of Madrid, an honour that recognises her unbreakable commitment to democratic principles.
On the other hand, Edmundo González has been highlighted for his role as a leader from exile. His work has been fundamental in promoting a future democratic transition in Venezuela. The Madrid Executive has pointed out how he has become one of the main institutional symbols of the movement towards a restored democracy in his homeland.
Grateful for this recognition, González expressed through his social media that he accepts this distinction “on behalf of the Venezuelans who continue to fight for their rights inside and outside the country.” His figure represents not only hope for many Venezuelans but also an international call to support democratic causes.
Aside from the tribute to Machado and González, this Wednesday the granting of the Grand Cross of the Order of Dos de Mayo to 14 personalities and institutions that have made significant contributions in various fields was also approved. Among them are figures such as Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid; Carlos Sainz Jr., a prominent driver; and Audrey Pascual, a Madrid Paralympic skier.
This annual event is celebrated every 2nd of May, during the Day of the Community of Madrid, thus reaffirming the regional commitment to those who work tirelessly to improve our society.
