The outcome of a political controversy in Madrid
The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court has made a decision that marks a milestone in the recent political controversy in the Community of Madrid. In a ruling issued recently, the court has decided to archive the complaint filed against Isabel Díaz Ayuso, regional president and leader of the Popular Party (PP), for alleged revelation of secrets.
The complaint was filed by a former councillor from the municipality of Móstoles, who had been expelled from the PP after accusing the local mayor, Manuel Bautista, of workplace and sexual harassment. The former councillor claimed that Ayuso had leaked emails she had sent to the Presidency, which contained information about her allegations. According to her version, these emails were used by the party to discredit her, arguing that she did not mention the harassment until her eighth message.
The Supreme Court judges have supported the opinion of the prosecutor of the High Court, who had already recommended not to proceed with the investigation. In its ruling, it is highlighted that "the complaint lacks specific episodes that could fall under the criminal type" and that there is insufficient evidence to initiate any legal action. The court concluded that conducting an investigation would be "clearly prospective," implying that there are no solid grounds to continue with the case.
Despite the archiving of this initial complaint, Antonio Suárez-Valdés, lawyer for the former councillor, has expressed his intention to pursue other legal actions related to the initial accusations. The lawyer has indicated that he will file a new complaint regarding the alleged sexual harassment maneuvers perpetrated by Bautista.
This ruling could have significant repercussions in the Madrid political landscape. The Supreme Court's decision reinforces Ayuso's position within the PP and may influence future internal disputes within the party. Furthermore, it calls into question the allegations made by dissenting members and raises questions about how accusations are handled within the political sphere.
