The Madrid City Council has begun construction of a 10-metre fountain in Parque Ventas, which will become a new urban icon. This project aims to beautify and revitalise the area with a floating garden.
The city of Madrid is about to take a significant step towards modernising and beautifying the Parque Ventas area with the construction of an impressive monumental fountain that will reach 10 metres in height. This ambitious project, expected to be completed by next autumn, aims not only to be a visual attraction but also to improve the quality of the urban environment. The new fountain will be an integral part of the future floating garden being developed over a platform of 16,370 square metres, designed to provide a green space amidst the city bustle.
Daily, around 300,000 vehicles pass through this area, making Parque Ventas one of the busiest spots in Spain. However, the new design aims to transform this urban maze into an oasis where citizens can enjoy water and greenery. The fountain will feature three curved walls made of reinforced concrete and will be accompanied by water curtains that will create a relaxing sound environment while refreshing the air during hot summer days.
The architectural design reflects a circular geometry that aligns with the entire park intervention, promising to be not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Officials from the Madrid City Council have stated that this structure will serve as an urban reference from various distant points, thus becoming a symbol for those passing through the nearby streets.
Additionally, the circular pond located at its base will have approximately seven metres in diameter, where night lights will project aquatic shapes onto the curved walls, creating a unique visual spectacle as night falls. This type of lighting is part of the effort to make the space not only a place to rest during the day but also an attractive destination during the night hours.
The creation of this green space is part of Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida's commitment to revitalising urban areas and providing citizens with pleasant places to relax and enjoy. In this regard, around the monolith, vegetative flowerbeds and benches facing the fountain are planned, thus encouraging community and social use of the park.
This new landmark will not only be an aesthetic addition to the Madrid landscape; it also represents a significant investment in sustainable urban infrastructure. Construction has recently begun with preliminary work such as foundation and site preparation. Javier Nájera, head of the municipal structures service, has explained that advanced techniques are being used to ensure that both trees and other plants can thrive properly on this new structure.
Parque Ventas is not the only green project underway; significant improvements are also being made in other nearby spaces such as Antonio Pirala park. These initiatives aim to connect different green areas within Madrid and offer more recreational options to its inhabitants.
