The city of Madrid is in full countdown to welcome Pope Leo XIV, who will visit the Spanish capital from June 6 to 9. One of the most anticipated moments of this visit will be the traditional presentation of the Golden Keys, a recognition that symbolizes appreciation and respect towards prominent figures worldwide. This act, generally reserved for heads of state, will take place on Sunday, June 7, coinciding with the celebration of Corpus Christi.
The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has emphasized the institutional significance of this act during an informational breakfast with the President of the Episcopal Conference, Luis Argüello. Almeida has expressed his hope that this ceremony will be a special and meaningful moment for both Madrilenians and visitors. The Palacio de Cibeles will be the chosen venue for this emotional encounter.
The presentation of the Golden Keys is a deeply rooted tradition in Madrid, recognizing international personalities for their contributions to various causes. Although it usually takes place in the plenary hall of the City Hall, papal visits have taken this act to iconic outdoor locations. In 1982, for example, the then mayor Enrique Tierno Galván presented the keys to John Paul II in a memorable ceremony at the Doctor Gregorio Marañón square. More recently, in 2011, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón did the same with Benedict XVI at the Puerta de Alcalá during World Youth Day.
Through this distinction, Almeida seeks to convey a clear message: Madrid is a city that values its traditions and Christian roots. In his own words, “Madrid is a city that does not overlook or ignore its roots,” which he considers fundamental for facing the future. The presentation also represents a testament of affection and admiration towards Leo XIV, who has been described as “an essential moral compass” in difficult times.
As the date of the event approaches, Almeida has asked for understanding from citizens regarding potential logistical complications during those days. A reinforcement of public transport and additional services is expected to facilitate movement for both locals and visitors. “We are working hard to ensure that this act is emotional and imbued with all possible solemnity,” concluded the mayor.
