An Unexpected Turn for Madrilucía

Madrilucía, the festival that promised to be a cultural milestone in the Spanish capital, has decided to cancel its 2026 edition due to technical and administrative complications. This decision has left many event followers surprised, as the organisers had been working hard to ensure a memorable experience.

In an official statement, the promoters explained that the cancellation aims to preserve the quality and safety of the event. Despite their efforts to coordinate with suppliers and collaborators, the circumstances have led to this difficult decision. Additionally, it has been announced that refunds for those who had purchased tickets are being properly managed.

The controversy does not end here. The organisation of Madrilucía has been at the centre of a dispute between the City Council of Madrid and that of Getafe. Recently, spokespeople from the PSOE, including Reyes Maroto and Antonio Muñoz, met with the mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, to discuss the implications of the festival. Criticism points to a supposed “banalisation” of local cultural traditions.

Sara Hernández expressed her concerns about the issues generated in terms of mobility and transport during the event. The dates chosen by Madrilucía coincided with the patron festivities of Getafe, complicating the situation even further. Although the organisers agreed to move some dates when they coincided with San Isidro, this was not enough to calm the tensions.

Despite these challenges, the promoters have announced plans to reschedule the event for 2027. However, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to overcome the administrative difficulties and achieve a consensus among local authorities. The delegate for Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, Borja Carabante, had previously defended that measures were being taken to improve mobility during the festival.

Despite the setback suffered this year, the organisers have expressed their gratitude to all the companies and institutions involved in the development of the project so far. They have also thanked the public for their enthusiasm since the initial announcement of the festival.
