A moving start in the heart of Madrid
Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Spain with a clear focus: to place the most vulnerable at the centre of his agenda. On his first day in Madrid, the Pontiff chose to visit the CEDIA 24-hour centre of Cáritas Madrid, located in the Lucero neighbourhood, where homeless individuals and immigrants facing difficult situations are supported. This symbolic gesture underscores the Pope's intention to connect with those often forgotten by society.
During his visit to the centre, Leo XIV not only toured the facilities but also listened to the inspiring stories of those who have found support there. At the end of his tour, he left a reflection in the honour book: "Let yourselves be challenged by the gaze of those who need your help and welcome them with the charity of Christ." This statement resonates as an urgent call for Christians to act in response to immediate needs.
Among the most moving testimonies was that of Niurka, a young Cuban woman who arrived pregnant and alone in Spain. Her account of how she managed to rebuild her life thanks to the support received was a key moment during the visit. Also present was Khadry, a Senegalese immigrant who arrived in the country during the pandemic and now enjoys job stability. Both testimonies reflect the everyday miracles that occur in this centre.
Leo XIV used this occasion to call upon the entire Christian community, emphasising that "charity does not admit delays" and warning against the danger of being swayed by political ideologies that distract from true human suffering. "It is not possible to forget the poor if we do not wish to step outside the living current of the Church," he stated, making it clear that every encounter with a person in need is a unique opportunity to act.
Cardinal José Cobo, Archbishop of Madrid, thanked the Pope for choosing this emblematic place to begin his visit. He highlighted how Cáritas Madrid has supported nearly 90,000 people in the past year through over 400 social projects. His intervention underscored the importance of community work and social commitment within the ecclesiastical framework.
As his visit progresses, Leo XIV is preparing to participate in mass events where hundreds of thousands of faithful are expected to gather in the streets of Madrid. However, before the festive bustle and official ceremonies, the Pope has made it clear what his priority is: to make direct contact with those who need it most.
