A Historic Day for the Madrid Church
This Monday, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium became the stage for an unprecedented celebration for the Catholic community of Madrid. With 70,000 faithful present, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message about the importance of communion and co-responsibility within the Church, highlighting the challenges it faces in large cities.
During his speech, the Pontiff used a football metaphor to emphasise the significance of the event: “Today, the Church of Madrid has scored a fantastic goal forever,” he stated, addressing Cardinal Archbishop José Cobo. This comparison resonated deeply with the attendees, who saw in his words a reflection of the renewed commitment to evangelisation and community work.
Before the papal address, attendees enjoyed a series of cultural activities that included musical performances and personal testimonies. The programme was designed to highlight the various stages of human life through artistic presentations that addressed themes such as childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.
