A masterstroke in risk management
The Club Atlético Osasuna has made a bold decision by taking out a contingency insurance valued at 1.2 million euros, designed to protect its finances against the potential risk of relegation. This measure, unanimously approved by the club's board, aims to mitigate the economic impact that relegation could entail, estimated at 6 million euros.
The policy was structured by the renowned insurance firm Howden, which specializes in managing large accounts and corporate risks. Through its Howden Sports division, the company provides tailored solutions for clubs and athletes, helping to minimise the negative effects that can arise in the sporting arena.
Although Osasuna managed to maintain its status in La Liga this season, which extinguished the risk associated with this insurance, the premium paid will not be refunded. Such types of insurance are becoming increasingly common in professional sports and reflect a trend towards more prudent financial management among clubs.
The insurance portfolio of Howden goes beyond just relegation coverage; it includes financial guarantees for future payments and policies that protect against player injuries or incapacities. These innovative solutions are crucial for clubs navigating the complexities of modern football economics.
As Spanish football faces economic and sporting challenges, the strategy adopted by Osasuna could serve as a model for other teams. The implementation of insurances like this not only protects the club's finances but also allows for more effective long-term planning.
Through these proactive measures, Osasuna demonstrates that it is possible to balance sporting ambitions with financial responsibility. In an environment where relegations can have devastating consequences for annual accounts, having a solid financial backing becomes an undeniable priority.
