The recent visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid has rekindled an ancient Christian tradition: the blessing of babies from the popemobile. This emotional ritual, which has touched thousands of faithful, has become one of the highlights of his tour through the Spanish capital.
During his travels, numerous parents have had the opportunity to bring their children close to the Pontiff, who makes the sign of the cross over them. This gesture not only symbolizes a desire for divine protection but also represents a bond between generations and a tangible expression of faith.
According to Professor Pablo Pérez, an expert in Contemporary History, this practice has its roots in the Old Testament. The blessing is seen as an invocation for God to grant goods and protection to those who receive it. “It is a sincere wish for things to go well,” Pérez explains.
The sign of the cross, which evokes both the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, has remained one of the most important symbols within Christianity. Although traditionally associated with popes, this custom is not exclusive to them; priests and family members also participate in this sacred act.
Over time, especially after the Second Vatican Council, papal protocol has evolved towards a closer relationship with the faithful. During the papacy of Paul VI, a process began that allowed popes to interact more directly with the crowds. This transformation was continued by John Paul II, who further popularized this image during his international trips.
The current visit of Pope Leo XIV has been no different. During his tour of Madrid, he stopped several times to bless babies brought by members of his team. One of the most touching moments occurred in front of the Royal Palace when the vehicle made an unexpected stop to allow a baby to receive his blessing alongside his mother and grandmother.
Throughout the weekend, Leo XIV has blessed more than fifteen babies while traversing iconic streets such as Serrano and Colón. The captured images show parents lifting their little ones as the popemobile passes by hundreds of thousands of excited spectators.
As Leo XIV continues his visit to Spain, it is clear that this tradition not only endures but also revitalizes with each new encounter between the Pope and the faithful.
