The construction of the new Solagua Sports Complex has begun, transforming a space that has been abandoned since 2009. It is expected to be ready in two years and will offer multiple sports facilities.
The construction of the new Solagua Sports Complex in Leganés began this Thursday, marking the start of a project aimed at revitalising an area that has remained neglected since the closure of the historic pool in 2009. This ambitious complex will be built on a plot of 88,500 square metres, with an initial phase covering 38,800 square metres. The total investment amounts to 12,896,191.98 euros, and the works are expected to be completed within 24 months. Mayor Miguel Ángel Recuenco highlighted the importance of this project, calling it “a historic day for Leganés” and emphasising its significance for generations who longed for the recovery of the iconic space.
The new complex will feature five swimming pools, including three outdoor ones, one of which will have waves, as well as two indoor pools. Facilities will also include a gym, spa, sauna, and jacuzzi, along with areas dedicated to hospitality and green spaces totalling approximately 14,500 square metres. This comprehensive approach aims not only to provide sports options but also to create a family leisure space.
In addition to the aquatic and sports facilities, the project includes the construction of an additional building for hospitality covering 1,000 square metres. To facilitate access to the complex, new bus stops and access points from the Ronda Norte will be established. Furthermore, solar panels will be installed on the roof of the facility with a capacity exceeding 50,000 W, contributing to its sustainability.
Carlos Delgado, the first deputy mayor and councillor for Works, emphasised that this development responds to the population growth in the surrounding neighbourhoods and will increase the municipal offerings for recreational and sports activities. “Solagua is already a tangible reality,” Delgado stated during his visit to the site where the works began.
Over the years leading up to the start of the project, residents had expressed their frustration over the lack of action regarding the old Solagua pool. The new facility promises to be not only a modern sports centre but also a climate refuge for all local residents and even external visitors.
As the works progress over the next two years, the Solagua Sports Complex is expected to become one of the main recreational attractions in Leganés. Citizens will soon be able to enjoy not only aquatic activities but also various options to enhance their quality of life through sports and family leisure.
