A Historic Event for Catholic Youth
On the night of last Saturday, the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid became a vibrant stage of faith and hope, gathering approximately 500,000 young people who attended a vigil presided over by Pope Leo XIV. This event has been described as a significant milestone for Catholic youth, marking a moment of unprecedented spiritual and communal connection.
The arrival of the Pontiff was met with great enthusiasm. As he passed through the Plaza de Lima, Leo XIV broke established protocols, stopping to greet and bless the faithful who eagerly awaited him. He also urged those present not to fear significant commitments in their lives: ‘Never be afraid to think about a vocation or to start a family’.
Throughout his address, the Pope offered comforting words about loneliness and personal difficulties. He reminded everyone that ‘No one is alone; Jesus does not abandon us’, emphasizing the importance of mutual support among all members of the Christian community.
Closing his message with a strong call to action, Leo XIV urged young people to become true missionaries in the face of the world's current poverty. ‘Be missionaries of the Gospel in the face of material and spiritual poverty’, he declared to the enthusiastic applause of the audience. The Pope entrusted them as agents of change capable of transforming realities through love.
When questioned about his personal influences within the Christian sphere, Leo XIV mentioned three key figures: Saint John Chrysostom for his theological depth; Saint Thomas of Villanova as an example of charity; and Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo for his missionary work in America. These references underscore his commitment to an active and engaged faith.
