The Plaza de Lima in Madrid will become an iconic place following the decision of the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, to keep the cross installed during the recent visit of Pope Leo XIV. This announcement comes after around 500,000 people attended the vigil with the pontiff, an event that marked a milestone in the religious and cultural history of the city.
A permanent symbol for Madrid
Almeida highlighted that it makes sense for the cross to remain in its original location, stating: "It makes perfect sense for it to stay in Plaza de Lima itself. We hope we can do it; otherwise, it will have another place in Madrid." The cross will not only serve as a reminder of the days experienced during this apostolic visit but also as a testament to the Christian roots present in Madrid and its society.
Despite the enthusiasm for maintaining this symbol, the mayor clarified that the City Council is conducting technical studies to ensure that its installation meets all necessary conditions for safety. "It is possible," Almeida stated regarding the project's feasibility, although he emphasized that all technical requirements must be met.
During the event held at the Palacio de Cibeles, Almeida expressed his gratitude to the public workers and private companies involved in organizing the event. He also thanked the Governments of Spain and the Community of Madrid, as well as the police forces for their collaboration. The mayor anticipated that this apostolic journey would bring "great gifts" to Madrid.
Additionally, Almeida announced a series of cultural initiatives related to previous papal visits. Plans are underway to create memorabilia related to Benedict XVI and Saint John Paul II, who also left their mark on the Spanish capital. In another vein, it was confirmed that the Family Choir Los Mil will offer a special performance during the upcoming Christmas season, which promises to further enrich the festive atmosphere in Madrid.
