An icon of Madrid rock bids farewell
The iconic concert venue Gruta 77, located in the heart of the Carabanchel district, has announced its definitive closure for December 2026. This venue, which has been a fundamental pillar in Madrid's underground music scene for the past 26 years, will close its doors after hosting over 5,100 events.
Throughout its history, Gruta 77 has become the stage where numerous national and international bands have shone. Since its opening in 2000, artists such as Mamá Ladilla, Siniestro Total, and The Damned have left their mark in this place that has a capacity of just 300 people. The intimacy of the space has allowed attendees to experience unique moments with their favourite bands.
Juan Luis Nieto, known as el Indio, is the owner and driving force behind Gruta 77. In an emotional statement, Nieto expressed his gratitude towards the audience that has supported the venue over the years, describing them as “the best Rock and Roll audience on the planet.” However, he also shared his personal need to close this chapter: “I am exhausted after years of endless days,” he stated.
Despite the physical closure of the venue, Nieto assured that the promoter will continue to organise concerts in other venues throughout Madrid. “We are going to treat ourselves to a good farewell in the months that remain,” he promised, hinting that there will be special events before the final closure.
As the final date approaches, rock lovers can expect a series of memorable concerts that will celebrate the rich musical history that has characterised Gruta 77. With a mix of nostalgia and excitement, both artists and fans are ready to pay tribute to a place that has been much more than a venue; it has been a home for many.
