Electronic music has found a new unexpected ambassador: Father Guilherme Guimarães Peixoto, known as the ‘DJ Priest’. This Portuguese priest has managed to fuse his religious vocation with his passion for techno, creating a phenomenon that is taking Madrid by storm. With a performance scheduled for 28 November at Live Las Ventas, he has already sold 75% of the tickets, promising a historic event.
Born in 1974 in Guimarães, Portugal, Guilherme is not just a priest; he is also a lieutenant colonel and military chaplain of the Portuguese Army. His musical career began during his service in Afghanistan, where he organised events for his fellow soldiers. What started as charity karaoke quickly transformed into professional DJ sessions, leading him to share the stage with renowned international artists.
Throughout his career, Father Guilherme has maintained a message focused on peace and inclusion. “Music is another language to celebrate the essence of the Church,” he states, while advocating for techno as a tool to combat discrimination and promote messages of tolerance. His unique style combines epic melodies with spiritual messages, creating a unique experience for attendees.
The DJ Priest phenomenon gained worldwide notoriety during the World Youth Day 2023, where he captivated over a million young people before Pope Francis' mass. Since then, his popularity has continued to grow; he has over three million followers on Instagram and is preparing to perform in front of nearly 3,000 people under a glass and heated structure in Las Ventas.
The Madrid session is organised by the travelling festival REBELS and promises to be an unforgettable celebration that will start at six in the evening and extend past midnight. With tickets starting at 27 euros, all indications suggest that Las Ventas will experience a magical night where religion and electronic music intertwine like never before.
